I realize that macs are really expensive and they're not compatible with everything. I had a very hard time switching from a Dell because of that. But, the great thing about them is if you're near a store, they have classes.

I bought a year's worth of one-on-one consultations (one hour with a specialist every week), and they taught me everything I need to know. It wasn't very intimidating (once I began). And most of the people I worked with had worked in churches, or their dad was a pastor... they understood what I needed to know.

I really appreciate Bob's comment, "How much handcuffs us to our computers instead of doing the work of ministry?" But, then when I work with college students, I realize how much ministry happens on the computer.

Thanks for your thoughts on technology. I find more problems finding the time to make use of all the tools available and then discerning which tools to deal with in this age of information overload. These new opportunities open up whole new volumes of info. But how much do I need to know? What is vital? How much handcuffs us to our computers instead of doing the work of ministry?

I am continually amazed at how far behind I am in this ipod, Facebook world of ours. I genuinely appreciate Alban Institute for keeping me up to date not just in theology and the practice of ministry for much of my 40 year ministry, but also for introducing me to new means of communication and participation in the wider world of the church.

I find the biggest obstacle to my using "technology", is having someone explain how something works, or even what is available and can be done. (I guess I don't want to look stupid, admitting that "I'm not smarter than a 5th grader") That and the fact I find myself so busy using the technology I have already it is difficult to keep up between urgent emails and calls on the cell phone. (by the way, what's a "URI"?)
